Entrevistamos a Corey James

Hace unas semanas pudimos entablar conversación con una de las grandes promesas del progressive en Reino Unido, COREY JAMES. Desde su estudio en Liverpool y gracias a su sonido fresco y potente no ha dejado de sacar buenos lanzamientos por los sellos más punteros del panorama electrónico en el último año y medio: Size Records, Protocol, Sosumi, Code Red, BigBeat... y en donde el apoyo de los artistas referentes del EDM le llueven en cada producción que sale al mercado. Ahora nos proponemos que le conozcáis un poquito más, ya que estamos seguros que le podremos ver cerca muy pronto.

Wololo Sound: Queremos saber más sobre ti, ¿cuándo empezaste a producir música y quién fue tu mayor inspiración en tus inicios?
Corey James: Empecé a producir música cuando tenía 18 años, hace unos 4-5 años. Mis mayores inspiradores y por los que empecé a producir música electrónica fueron Swedish House Mafia, y hasta la fecha diría que lo siguen siendo.

WololoSound: We want to know more about you, when did you start to produce music? And who was your biggest inspiration at your beginning?
Corey James: I started making music when I was 18 so it’s been about 4/5 years now. My biggest inspirations and purpose for starting to write electronic dance music was the Swedish House Mafia, and to this date I would say they still are my biggest inspirations.

2015 fue un año increíble para ti; muchos buenos tracks (que personalmente me encatan), has firmado con grandes sellos, un grandísimo support recibido... ¿Qué esperas para este 2016?
Gracías por esas buenas palabras, 2015 fue genial para mí, tuve la oprtunidad de lanzar mi música por algunos de mis sellos de ensueño y trabajar con algunos de mis grandes ídolos. Estoy trabajando más duro que nunca y siempre intentando dar todo para mejorar, así que esperemos que 2016 sea más grande y mejor aún.

2015 was an amazing year for you; a lot of good tracks (that I personally love them) signed with major labels, lot of supports… What do you expect for this 2016?
Thank you for the kind words, 2015 was great for me I had the opportunity to release on some of my dream labels and work with some of my biggest idols. I’m working harder than ever & always trying my best to improve so hopefully 2016 will be bigger and better.

¿Qué te gusta hacer en tu tiempo libre? Cuando quieres salir y despejar la mente, coger algo de inspiración fuera del estudio...
Me gusta ir al gimnasio cada mañana. Personalmente mi tiempo libre lo gasto en lo que me gusta que es en el estudio (Risas), pero fuera del estudio me gusta quedar con amigos y la familia, o relajarme jugando a la Xbox.

What do you like to do in your free time? When you need to go out from the studio and free your mind, and maybe to get some inspiration.
I like to go the gym every morning. Personally my free time is spent what I love doing and that is making music haha, but if you mean out of the studio I like to chill with friends and family or just chill & play Xbox.

Normalmente sueles producir progressive-house, pero hemos leído que a veces en el estudio sueles trabajar en algo más tech y deep. ¿Podremos ver esos tracks siendo lanzados (en sellos o gratis)?
Me encanta todo tipo de música y produzco de todo, hasta hip hop. Definitivamente voy a sacar algo de música este año que personalmente creo que sorprenderá a mucha gente, lo que creo que es algo bueno. Ser diferente y único siempre es bueno. Disfruto creando todo tipo de música.

You are usually a progressive-house, groovy-house producer, but we have read that sometimes in the studio you try to do something more tech or deep. Can we expect to see those tracks to be released (in a label or for free)?
I love all kinds of music I make everything even hip hop. There is definitely going to be some music released by me this year that I personally think will surprise a lot of people, which I personally think is a good thing. Being different and unique is always good; I enjoy making all types of music.

Ahora que Will K se ha mudado a Inglaterra y ambos trabajáis tan bien juntos, ¿habéis pensado alguna vez en crear un dúo?
Ambos lo he hemos pensado pero definitivamente somos artistas en solitario y así continuará siendo. Estoy seguro que seguiremos haciendo colaboraciones juntos en el futuro ya que somos buenos amigos y trabajamos bien juntos.

Now that Will K has moved to England and both of you work so good together, have you ever thought in becoming a dynamic duo?
Me and Will both thought about it but we are definitely solo artists and will continue to be solo artists. I’m sure we will continue to make collaborations together in the future though as we are good friends and work well together.

Recientemente has actuado en la Miami Music Week, nuestras felicitaciones ya que es un gran logro! ¿Que tipo de sets hiciste en estas fiestas?
¡Gracias, MMW fue increíble! Intenté hacer sets que hicieran bailar a la gente (Risas). En la Release Party pinche un warm up ya que era el primer DJ en actuar, así que mi trabajo era el de mantener a la gente en la pista. No hubiera sido bueno si salgo y lo reviento con un set enérgico habiendo poca gente en la pista, así que intenté que la gente que había no dejara de bailar, y obviamente también incluí bastante música propia, hasta temas tech-house que voy a lanzar.
En Sosumi pinché en un set más tarde así que fue algo más fácil para mi para probar algunas nuevas IDs y unos temas de progressive-house más potentes. Ambas fiestas fueron increíbles y estoy super agradecido a Release Records y Sosumi Records por invitarme.

You’ve just played MMW, which is a big deal, congratulations! What type of sets did you create at the Sosumi party and the Release party?
Thank you MMW was amazing, I tried to play sets that make people dance haha, Release I played a warm up set as I was the first DJ on so it was my job to get people on the dance floor, there would be no point in me going out and smashing a big set if there was only a few people dancing so I tried to get people dancing but obviously I still included a lot of my own tracks, even tech house tracks I am yet to release. Sosumi I played a later set so it was a bit more easy for me to test out some new ID’s and a bit more energetic Prog house tracks, both parties where amazing and I’m super grateful for the Release Records & Sosumi Records family for inviting me to play

¿Cuáles han sido los tres mejores momentos de este año para ti en la MMW?
Conocer a tantos de mis ídolos ha sido definitivamente uno de los mejores momentos, especialmente cuando algunos de mis ídolos me han felicitado por mis sets o mis temas. Fue algo muy bonito y motivador de escuchar.
Otro buen momento ha sido solo el estar rodeado de tantos buenos amigos y gente de todo el mundo que tienen tus mismos objetivos, me ha inspirado. Desde que volví a casa ya he hecho como cuatro temas (Risas).
Y el mejor momento ha sido definitivamente ver que Steve Angello pinchó mi 'Make The Crowd Go' en Ultra y mi remix de 'Remember' en Space.

What were your top 3 memories of this year’s MMW?
Meeting so many of my idols was definitely one of my best memories, especially when some of my idols complimented my sets or songs that was really nice and motivating to hear.
Another good memory is just being surrounded by so many good friend & people from all over the world who all have similar goals, it inspires me. Since I have been home I have wrote like 4 tracks haha.
Steve Angello playing my Make The Crowd Go @ Ultra and my Remember remix @ Space was definitely the best memory for me. 

Dejando Miami. Vas a actuar en Creamfields UK, lo que puedo imaginar que será algo especial para ti, pero hay un montón de festivales por todo Europa. ¿Podremos verte en otros países este verano?
Cramfields ha sido uno de mis objetivos porque es mi festival local, es un sueño poder actuar ahí. Y espero estar en algunos festivales y clubs por todo el mundo pronto, pero quien sabe...tengo que seguir trabajando duro y ojalá que esto de sus frutos.

Apart from Miami. You'll play Creamfields UK, I can imagine it will be something special for you, but there are a lot of festivals along Europe. Can we see you in other countries this summer?
Creamfields was one of my goals from starting because it’s my local festival; it’s a dream ton play there. I hope to be on some festivals and club nights across the world soon, but who knows just got to keep working hard and hopefully that will pay off.

¿Qué conoces sobre la escena española?¿Conoces algún productor español? o, ¿te gustaría trabajar con alguno?
He trabajado con David Tort. Es una leyenda, también actué en su Hotl Miami Party y fue fantástico y un honor que me pidieran actuar ahí. Todavía no he actuado en España pero uno de mis objetivos es el poder debutar en un club en Ibiza (mi lugar favorito en la tierra) pronto (Risas). También conocí a Abel Ramos en Miami y es un muy buen tipo, me encata su música y sería genial trabajar con él en el futuro.

What do you know about the scene in Spain (crowd, djs, parties, etc.)? Do you know some Spanish producers, or would you like to work with anyone?
I have worked with David Tort who is a legend, I actually played his Hotl Miami party and it was amazing and an honour to be asked to play there.  I haven’t played a gig yet in Spain but it’s definitely a goal to make a club debut in Ibiza (my favourite place on earth) soon haha.  I also met Abel Ramos in Miami and he’s a super nice guy, I love his music it would be cool to work with him on a project in the future.
