El artista holandés responde a las preguntas de Wololo Sound
WS: Lo primero de todo muchas gracias por darnos la oportunidad de poder entrevistarte. Eres de Amsterdam, y todos sabemos que Holanda es un país de donde salen muchos DJs. ¿Crees que tienes más facilidades para crecer como DJ en un entorno como Holanda?
SAM: No realmente, creo que en Amsterdam y en Holanda en general hay bastante competencia. Hay muchísimos chicos y chicas jóvenes que quieren convertirse en DJs famosos, entonces es muy difícil destacar entre la multitud.
WS: You are from Amsterdam and, as all we know, a lot of famous DJs are from Amsterdam. Do you think that a place like Amsterdam it’s easier than another for growning up as a DJ?
SAM: Not really, I think that in Amsterdam and in The Netherlands in general there is a lot of competition. There’s so many young boys and girls that want to become a famous DJ so it’s very hard to stand out from the crowd.
WS: Alguna vez has dicho que antes de tu éxito bajo el nombre de Sam Feldt, habías mandado muchas canciones a sellos como Spinnin Records bajo diferentes alias. ¿Cual crees que ha sido la diferencia entre tus otros proyectos y el proyecto de Sam Feldt para que éste último haya triunfado?
SAM: Lo más importante es que bajo el nombre de Sam Feldt, desde el principio, solo hice y pinché música que me gustaba a mi mismo. Pasé muchos años (bajo un nombre diferente) haciendo música que pensé que gustaría a la gente, DJs y sellos pero nunca obtuve respuesta de ellos. Cuando dije: "Cambia eso, voy a hacer música que me guste" fué cuando llegó el éxito.
WS: Occasionally, you said that before your success beyond the name of Sam Feldt, you sent a lot of music to record labels like Spinnin Records with another alias. What do you think has been the difference between your other projects and Sam Feldt's project so that the latter has achived in the music industry?
SAM: The most important thing is that under my Sam Feldt name, from the very beginning, I only made and played music that I loved myself. I spent many years (under a different name) making music that I thought other people, DJ’s and labels would like but I never got a reply. When I said: screw that, I’m gonna make stuff that I like - that’s when my success came.
WS: Antes de que llegaras a triunfar mundialmente, uno de los estilos que más estaba de moda era el big room, sin embargo desde tus primeras producciones como 'Bloesen' o 'Hot Skin' has apostado por un estilo más cercano al deep house que con el tiempo se volvería en un estilo con mucho éxito. ¿Por qué decidiste tomar este camino y no seguir la moda en aquel momento?
SAM: Fui un DJ de big room durante muchos años pero realmente no disfrutaba con la música que estaba produciendo y pinchando. Creo que la gente sintió eso, y esa es la razón por la que no triunfé con mis otros nombres. Luego, al hacer un estilo diferente que realmente amo, pude encontrar mi propio sonido e inspirar a otros DJs a hacer lo mismo.
WS: Before you were a famous DJ, Big Room was the most fashionable music genre in electronic music. However from your first productions as 'Bloesen' or 'Hot Skin' you bet on a style closer to deep house than with the time would become a style with much success. Why take this path and not follow what most of the people do at that time?
SAM: I was a big room DJ for many years but I didn’t really enjoy the music that I was making and playing. I think that people feel that, and that’s the reason I never became big under my different name. By making a different style that I love myself I was able to find my own sound and inspire other DJ’s to do the same.
WS: Uno de los instrumentos más usados en tus canciones es el saxofón. Incluso en tus set como el de Ultra Miami 2017 llevaste un saxofonista para que tocara en directo. ¿Por qué este instrumento y no otro?
SAM: Mis canciones normalmente incorporan un montón de instrumentos en vivo diferentes, no solo el saxofón. También contienen muchas guitarras, el piano (que toco yo mismo) y por ejemplo trompetas. Es por eso, que ahora mismo, la banda de los directos de Sam Feldt incluye tres musicos junto a mí: Quirijn con la trompeta, Tariq con el saxofón y Jordi con las guitarras.
WS: Saxophone is one of the instruments more used in your productions. Even in your live sets like Ultra Music you perform with saxophonist. Why did you choose saxophone as one of your most used instrument?
SAM: My songs usually incorporate a lot of different live instruments - not only the sax. They also contain a lot of guitars, piano (that I play myself) and for example trumpet. That’s why, right now, the Sam Feldt live band consists of 3 band members next to myself: Quirijn on trumpet, Tariq on saxophone and Jordi on guitars.
WS: Llevas unos cuantos años triunfando como DJ y productor, ¿Cuando tomaste la decisión de crear un álbum y por que?
SAM: El álbum Sunrise to Sunset comenzó como una idea para un EP (de 6 temas), luego en un álbum, y luego en un doble álbum que es lo que es ahora. Como productor solo puedo lanzar un single cada más o menos 3 meses para darle el espacio y tiempo que se merece, así que había mucha música por ahí sin ser lanzada. ¡Ahora es el momento de darle esa música a mis fans!
WS: You had been successful as a DJ and producer for a few years. When you took the decision to create an album and why?
SAM: The album Sunrise to Sunset started out as an idea for an EP (of six tracks), then grew into an album, and then into the double album it is now. As a producer you can only release a single every 3 months or so, to give it the space and time it deserves. I was making a lot more music than just a single every 3 months so there was a lot of good music just lying around. Now the time has come to give that music to my fans!
WS: Hace unos meses habías anunciado que tenías unas 20 canciones preparadas para un nuevo álbum, finalmente has decidido lanzarlo en dos partes. Sunrise y Sunset, que juntos forman From Sunrise To Sunset. ¿Por qué te has decidido por este formato para lanzarlo?
SAM: Los dos nuevos álbumes contienen 24 canciones en total. Las 24 canciones representan las 24 horas que tenemos durante un día, lo que simboliza que la música de Sam Feldt se puede escuchar en cualquier momento del día. Además tengo 24 años y este doble álbum ha sido lanzado el 24 de noviembre lo que realmente completa la historia.
WS: Some moths ago you said that you have about 20 news songs ready for the new album. Finally, you decided to release it in two albums: Sunrise and Sunset. Why did you decided to reléase it in that way?
SAM: The two album contain 24 tracks in total. The 24 tracks stand for the amount of hours we have in a day - which symbolizes that Sam Feldt music can be enjoyed any time of the day. I’m also 24 years old myself and we are releasing the album on the 24th of November, so that really completes the story.
WS: Lanzar un álbum es una tarea complicada, ya que lanzar tantas canciones juntas puede suponer un problema si no tienes suficiente originalidad con los temas. Tu has lanzado 24 canciones nuevas en forma de dos álbumes en menos de dos meses. ¿Como haces para que cada canción del álbum suene diferente pero a la vez no pierda tu estilo propio?
SAM: Mi música siempre ha sido diversa y sobre colaborar con artistas interesantes. Para este álbum nada ha sido diferente. ¡Trabajar junto a gente que inspira tanto realmente me ayuda a crear y mantener cada canción única!
WS: Releasing an album is a complicated task because throwing so many songs at the same time can be a problem if you don’t have enough originality with the songs. You have released 24 new songs in your 2 new albums in less than two months. How do you make each song on the album sound different but at the same time the album don’t lose your own style?
SAM: My music has always been about diversity and collaborating with interesting musicians. For this album, this is no different. Working together with inspiring people really helps me to make and keep every song unique!
WS: En ambos álbumes hay bastantes colaboraciones con otros artistas. Algunos muy conocidos como Akon, INNA o Shaggy y algunos menos conocidos. ¿Como decides con que artistas colaborar?
SAM: Siempre busco colaboraciones interesantes, no solo grandes nombres. Con cada canción me pregunto: "Quien sería el vocalista perfecto?" ¡Y luego contacto con él!
WS: In both albums, there are a lot of colaborations with another artists like Akon, INNA or Shaggy. Why do you decided which artists to collaborate with?
SAM: I always look for interesting combinations, not just big names. With every track, I ask myself: who would be the perfect vocalist for this track. And then I reach out!
WS: Aunque haya muchas colaboraciones en ambos álbumes, la mayoría son con cantantes. Sin embargo, Robert Falcon, Wild Culture o Toby Green han sido algunos de los pocos productores con los que has colaborado. ¿Por qué te decidiste por estos jóvenes talentos y no fuiste por el camino fácil apostando por productores de renombre?
SAM: Por la misma razón que comenté arriba. Busco sonidos interesantes, no grandes nombres
WS: Although there are a lot of collaborations on both albums, most of them are collaborations with singers. However, Robert Falcon, Wild Culture or Toby Green have been some of the few producers with whom you have collaborated. Why did you decide for this upcoming talents and didn’t go the easy way collaborating with renowned producers?
SAM: The same reason I mentioned above. I look for interesting sounds and not for the big names.
WS: Tienes una página web propia llamada Heartfeldt.me, donde tus fans pueden escuchar tus podcasts, enterarse de tus conciertos, acceder a contenido exclusivo e incluso ganar meet & greets contigo. ¿Por que decidiste crear algo así?
SAM: Hace unos dos años vi que tenía alrededor de 1 millón de fans entre todas las redes sociales. Sin embargo, no tenía ni idea de quienes eran esas personas ni como llegar a ellas. La única manera de llegar a ellos era pagar grandes cantidades de dinero en Facebook e Instagram (para llegar a personas que querían saber de mí). Para mí, eso es una idea ridícula y me di cuenta de que tenía que recuperar el control sobre mi propia base de fans para poder llegar a ellos directamente. Hace un año lancé mi portal Heartfeldt.me y desde entonces se registraron más de 20.000 fans. El año pasado lanzamos portales de Fangage para más de 20 artistas e influencers donde se incluyen Oliver Heldens, Headhunterz y muchos otros DJs.
WS: You have your own website called www.heartfeldt.me, where your fans can listen to your podcasts, find out about your gigs, have access to exclusive content and even win meet & greets with you. Why did you decide to create something like that?SAM: Around 2 years ago, I saw that I had around 1 million fans on all social media combined. I had, however, no idea of who these people were or how to reach them. The only way I could reach them was paying huge amounts of money to Facebook and Instagram (to reach the people that already wanted to hear from me). For me, this was a ridiculous idea and I realized I had to regain control over my own fan base to be able to reach my fans directly. A year ago, my portal heartfeldt.me got launched and since then 20.000 fans signed up. In the past year, we’ve launched Fangage portals for 20+ other artists and influencers including Oliver Heldens, Headhunterz and many other DJ’s
