Entrevistamos a Laidback Luke

Laidback Luke necesita poca presentación. El veterano artista holandés, conocido por su increíble talento a los platos, contesta a las preguntas de Wololo Sound, tan amable como de costumbre. Dj, productor, dueño de su propio sello discográfico, maestro de artes marciales, y recientemente padre de familia. Luke nos contesta sobre todos estos temas y muchos más.

- WS: En los últimos años muchos fans de la música electrónica se han referido a ti como uno de los mejores DJs del mundo técnicamente. ¿Qué piensas sobre esto? ¿Crees que todos los DJs ‘tops’ deberían tener este nivel de técnica?

- LL: Si te llamas a ti mismo DJ, y te pagan un gran precio por ello, ¿no sería lógico interesarse en todo lo que hay que saber acerca del DJing? Si comprases carne en una carnicería, ¿no esperarías que sea un buen carnicero? O si vas a un médico especialista, esperas que sepa y conozca todo sobre su oficio ¿no?. Esto es lo mismo para los Djs en mi forma de ver. Desafortunadamente muchos DJs son muy dejados o les asusta conocer más sobre esto. El arte del DJing es muy extenso y aprender más sobre ello puede ser muy inspirador.

- WS: In recent years most of electronic music fans have mentioned you like one of the best technical DJs of the world. What do you think about that? Do you think every “top” DJ should have this skill level?

- LL: If you call yourself a DJ, and you get paid an incredible fee for it, wouldn’t it make sense to dive into everything there is to know about DJing? If you buy your meat at a butcher, you’d expect him to be a good butcher right? Or if you go to a specialist doctor, you’d expect him to know everything about his trade right? This is the same for DJs in my eyes. Unfortunately a lot of DJs are either lazy or scared to dive more into it. The art of DJing is very big and learning the most about it can be very inspirational!

- A lo largo de tu extensa carrera, has coincidido con los mejores DJs del planeta. ¿De quién has aprendido más en la cabina? ¿Y en el estudio?

- Mis grandes ejemplos en el DJing son tipos como Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Bad Boy Bill y Frankie Bones. También algunos otros DJs holandeses como Remy, Per y Miss Monica. Aprendí de ellos simplemente estudiando sus mixtapes. Ocasionalmente grababa sus scratches y los practicaba una y otra vez. Muchos de mis conocimientos en el estudio vienen de Chocolate Puma. Ellos me descubrieron. Ellos me tenían escuchando a DJ Pierre y Carl Craig entre otros, preparándome para un sonido profesional.

- Along your extended career you have known most of the best artists of the world. Whose did you learn more from the decks? And from the studio?

- My big examples in DJing are guys like Jeff Mills, Dave Clarke, Bad Boy Bill and Frankie Bones. Some more Dutch DJs like Remy, Per and Miss Monica too. I learned from them just by studying their mixtapes. Occasionally recording scratches and just paractise them on repeat. A lot of my studio knowledge came from Chocolate Puma. They discovered me. They had me listen to DJ Pierre and Carl Craig amongst others, prepping me for a professional sound.

- Ahora queremos preguntarte por 'One To Watch' el nuevo sub-sello de Mixmash. En él estas dando una oportunidad a muchos nuevos talentos, como los españoles Evangelos y Subshock. ¿Qué es necesario para llamar tu atención? ¿Cómo eliges entre los cientos de demos que llegan a tu email?

- ¡Me encantan Evangelos y Subshock! Esos chicos son unos increíbles productores. La única cosa que se requiere es crear un tema que yo pueda pinchar y eso llamará mi atención. ¡Eso es todo! Pero es más fácil decirlo que hacerlo porque soy muy selectivo en ese aspecto. Y ser elegido entre los cientos y cientos de demos es solo una cuestión de suerte. Desafortunadamente no tengo tiempo para escucharlos todos. Me gustaría, pero es una tarea imposible.

- Now we want to ask you about ‘One To Watch’, the new sub-label from Mixmash. You are giving the opportunity to many new talents, like our Spanish friends Evangelos and Subshock. What is it required to call your attention? How do you choose among hundreds of demos who arrive to your mail?

- I love Evangelos and Subshock! Those guys are incredible producers. The only thing that is required, is to make a track that I can play and that will grab my attention. That’s it! But it’s easier said than done because I am very picky about producing. Getting to be picked from the hundreds and hundreds of demos is just a matter of luck. Unfortunately I don’t have time to listen to them all. I’d love to, but it’s an impossible task!

- ¿Qué proyectos tienes a corto/medio plazo? ¿Alguna colaboración que nos puedas adelantar?

- ¡Mi último tema acaba de salir! Se llama ‘Fcukin’ Beats’ y es una colaboración con Twoloud. Pero creo que ya escribisteis una increíble review sobre ello. Tengo dos colaboraciones en camino estilo ‘Dutch’ a 150 BPMs, algo que yo llamo ‘Jungla’ ahora. Una es una colaboración con Kura y la otra tiene influencia del merengue, con Juyen Sebulba y Shelco García & Teenwolf. Este género me hace sentir joven de nuevo, me encanta ahora mismo.

- Which projects do you have for a short/medium term? Are there some colabs that you can talk about?

- My newest track is out now! It’s called ‘Fcukin’ Beats’ and it’s a collab with Twoloud. But I believe you guys wrote an awesome review about it. I have two collabs on the way in the 150 BPM Dutch style, which I’m calling the ‘Jungla’ Style now. One is a collab with DJ Kura and the other one is a Merengue influenced track with Juyen Sebulba and Shelco Garcia & Teenwolf. This style makes me feel young again, really loving it right now!

- Ya llevas varios años teniendo tu propio escenario en el mejor festival del mundo, Tomorrowland. ¿Cómo se vive el Super You & Me desde dentro? ¿Eliges tú a los artistas que actúan en él?

- ¡Por supuesto, lo hago yo! Es fantástico tener la posibilidad de invitar a amigos, talentos y los DJs que amas a tu propio escenario. Que es también algo grande todo lo relacionado con los disfraces. A menudo nos llegan las presentaciones de los trajes desde los propios DJs y es increíble. Para Tomorrowland siempre tengo un traje diseñado para la ocasión. ¡El de este año será fantástico también!

- A few years hosting your own stage at the best festival in the world, Tomorrowland. How is to live Super You & Me from inside? Do you choose the artists who play in that stage?

- Yes I do! It’s awesome to be able to invite the friends, talents and the DJs you love to your own stage. What’s also a big thing is all the costumes involved. We often get the submissions for the costumes in from the DJs and it’s amazing. For Tomorrowland, I always have a custom suit designed and made. The one for this year will be amazing too!

- Y este año te toca abrir el Mainstage el sábado en las Daybreak Session con un set de 3 horas. ¿Qué tienes planeado? ¿Será diferente a cualquier otro de tus sets normales?

- Sí, será muy diferente, ¡pero seguiré siendo yo! Después de mi bocaza en el seminario ‘Real DJ-ing’ en Youtube, ahora me toca demostrar cómo se hace apropiadamente un set para abrir durante 3 horas. Por suerte, ¡tengo una gran experiencia! Yo solía ser el DJ de apertura para Roger Sanchez y Swedish House Mafia. Los sets de apertura son geniales y tengo ganas de mostrárselo a todos.

- And this year you are going to open the mainstage on Saturday at the Daybreak Sessions with 3 hours set. What are you planning? Will be different than other of your habitual sets?

- Yes, it will be very different, but it will still be me! After my big mouth in the ‘Real DJ-ing’ seminar on Youtube, now it’s up to me to show the world how you open a set properly for 3 hours. Luckily, I have a lot of experience! I used to be the opening DJ for Roger Sanchez and Swedish House Mafia. Opening sets are awesome to play and I’m excited to show everyone!

- Tu carrera como DJ, estudio, Mixmash, Mixmash Radio, vlogging, Artes Marciales, y recientemente un nuevo miembro en la familia. ¿Cómo lo haces para llevar este ritmo de vida? ¿Es difícil combinar tu carrera con tu vida familiar?

- Esencialmente lo es, pero si lo tienes todo bien planeado se puede conseguir. Y conseguirlo de la mejor manera posible. Por suerte disfruto con todo lo que hago así que estoy feliz de decir que estoy viviendo un sueño.

- Your DJ career, studio, Mixmash, Mixmash Radio, Vlogging, Martial Arts, and recently another member in your family. How can you manage to carry this rhythm of life? Is it difficult to combine your career with your family life?

- It essentially is, but if you plan everything right, everything can be done! And done on the highest level possible. Luckily I enjoy everything I do so I’m happy to say I’m living a dream life.
